Needed national political reforms

Politicians always tell the voters, “send me to Washington, D.C., and I’ll clean up the mess there.” But they never tell us how they will clean up the mess. I’m not a politician, so I will. Here’s how:

  1. Expand the U.S. House of Representatives so that every state has at least two congressional districts. Needed: a majority vote.

  2. Eliminate the debt ceiling. Needed: a majority vote.

  3. Require all electronic campaign finance reporting, and more frequent reporting. Needed: a majority vote.

  4. Overturn Citizens United. Needed: a constitutional amended.

  5. Apportion the U.S. Senate strictly on population. Needed: a constitutional amendment.

  6. Eliminate term limits for the U.S. President, and increase the term of office to six years. Needed: a constitutional amendment.

  7. Require public financing, and only public financing, for all campaigns. Needed: a constitutional amendment.

  8. Fully return the U.S. Senate to majority rule in accord with the U.S. Constitution. Needed: a change in the rules to eliminate the filibuster.

  9. Constitutionally establish that every citizen has the right to vote. Needed: a constitutional amendment.

  10. Establish uniform election laws and procedures across the nation, from Presidential elections to local elections for dog catcher. Needed: a constitutional amendment and federal implementing legislation.

  11. Raise the voting age to 21; the minimum age for the U.S. House to 30; for the U.S. Senate to 35; for President to 45; for cabinet officials and federal judges, to 35; for U.S. Supreme Court justices, to 45.

  12. Raise the minimum age for military service to 21.
