Louise Bruce: Why I’m running for chair of the MT Democratic Party

I’m Louise Bruce and I am running for Chair of the Montana Democratic Party. I’ve been involved in Montana Democratic Politics for three decades and never have I been more concerned with the direction the Democratic Party is heading, both state and national. Campaigns and tactics are driven more and more by data and statistics, and becoming less and less concerned with the individual voter. Intentional or not, this is not only hurting the Democratic Party, it is hurting Democracy. As the Chair of the Montana Democratic Party County Chairs Association I’ve talked to Democrats all over Montana. This is what they tell me:

They are weary from the never-ending email requests for donations and the total lack of personal contact. They feel ignored. They are grateful to have Nancy Keenan back in the fold. They want to do more but are not asked. Do they believe that we are the Party of the People? Maybe - sort of - not so much. They believe it is time to change course, and recognize the importance of local grassroots work and encourage Democratic activism all over Montana.

I’ve avoided the usual practice of email blasts to undisclosed recipients in favor of actually talking to people. Just as Democrats statewide want to talk to their elected officials about things that are important to them, I wanted to know directly what is on the minds of Democrats.

My first experience with politics happened when I still wore cat eye glasses with precious gems in the frames and saddle shoes. I went with my mother to a rally where Cesar Chavez spoke. (Cesar Chavez, along with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association. He was an American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist). There were important things said and done, individual and collective courage, and there was change for the better. It changed the direction of my life. Just like the first election of President Obama did for many Americans.

Not only am I concerned about the state of the Montana Democratic Party, but I am extremely concerned with the tactics of the Republican party which seem bent on tearing down all that Montanans have worked for — strong public education, protecting our public lands, and equality for everyone.

The Montana Democratic Party must be able to respond to those attacks through grassroots activism. Democrats have told me that they are proud of what the Democrats in the Legislature, along with Governor Bullock, accomplished – but we are still in the minority. Without a concerted effort now, that could easily become our permanent status. I believe the only way to win more legislative seats is through local Democratic activism. We need to stop sacrificing willing candidates who happen to live in difficult and swing legislative districts.

I hope to guide a stronger, more effective Democratic Party for the benefit of all Montanans. I will honor and protect the values and accomplishments of those who have worked tirelessly for a better Montana.
