Ryan Zinke burns campaign cash 2.6 times as fast as Denise Juneau

As of 30 June, Rep. Ryan Zinke’s re-election campaign had raised a lot of money — $3.7 million — and spent a lot of money — $2.6 million ($1.2 million on postage and printing), leaving him with $1.3 million in the bank.

His burn rate: 76 percent.

That’s 2.6 times the 29 percent burn rate for Denise Juneau’s campaign, which has raised $1.3 million, spent $330k, and has $810k in the bank.

Zinke may be spending large sums of money on direct mail fundraising. Clearly, his methods are bringing in large amounts of cash, but his high burn rate may mean that his fundraising has high overhead costs. Still, he begins the third quarter of 2016 with half again as much money in the bank as Juneau.

Zinke has raised more money than anyone for a Congressional campaign in Montana. The Democratic Congressional fundraising record is still held by Nancy Keenan’s 2000 campaign. Below, a comparison of the 2000–2016 campaigns in actual and 2016 dollars.
