Whitefish’s Solidarity with Standing Rock Rally set for 13 September

The Glacier Climate Action organization announced today that on Tuesday, 13 September, at 1600 in Whitefish’s Depot Park, there will be a rally (details) in support of the Standing Rock Sioux’s opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). GCA also has a Facebook page.

This is one of many solidarity with Standing Rock rallies that will be held across the country on Tuesday. According to GCA:

Tribal leaders are joined by hundreds of grassroots groups, including Glacier Climate Action and 350.org, calling on President Obama to instruct the Army Corps of Engineers to revoke the permits for this dirty oil pipeline and consult properly with American tribes.

By gathering in Whitefish, we hope to call attention to the brave water and land protectors at Standing Rock and encourage the Obama Administration to support the Standing Rock Sioux and their fight to protect sacred lands, clean water and a clean energy future.

If the pipeline, which runs mostly under private land, is stopped, oil from the Bakken oilfields that now produce a million barrels a day will continue to be transported by the less safe and more expensive methods of railcar and truck. Why some people seek that outcome escapes my ken.
